Apathy Or What?
A review of the 2010 Election Results for Florida Governor reveals that Alex Sink (D) received 2,522,857 votes while Republican Rick Scott received 2,589,915 votes, a difference of some 67,000 votes statewide. In Hillsborough County registered Democratic voters outnumber registered Republicans by 59,542. What if all 59,542 of those registered Democrats in Hillsborough County had voted for Sink, plus another 10,000 Democrats elsewhere in the state had voted for her, obviously the results would have been different. Is this apathy or what?
In the Senate race Republican Marco Rubio received 2.6 million votes, Mr. Crist (I) received 1.58 million votes and Mr. Meek (D) received just over 1 million votes statewide. It is reported that there are more registered Democrats in Florida than Republicans. It is certain that many of Mr. Crist’s votes were cast by Democrats as well as some Republicans. Proportionately there are not that many registered Independents in the state. What if all Democratic voters had voted for Mr. Meek? What if Mr. Crist had not been a candidate where would all of his votes gone? Is this apathy or what?
Mr. Meek won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate and therefore became the standard bearer for the party in Florida. While the number of votes he received in the primary is not immediately available, they are significant. The assertion that “we really didn’t know who he is” has little validity. He is a U.S. Congressman, he participated in all the debates, and he had advertising in many media markets. He also served in the Florida legislature and sponsored the “classroom size” amendment. What if all those primary voters had subsequently voted for him in the general election? What if among some voters race matters? Is this apathy or what?
